The Number 1 Reason Employees Are Quitting

What if you get turnover down to zero for your team? Well, you can’t I am sorry to say unless you are a soloist. The question then is how many times you have quit on yourself. But that is a different subject for another time.

No matter how great a leader you are it is impossible to get to zero forever, but it is possible to get close if you are leading others. People leave for a myriad of reasons. Moving, retirements, life challenges.

However, the number one reason today is not the pandemic as many want to blame. It is the lack of feeling valued by the employer. Namely the leader or manager of the person leaving. The pandemic simply exposed a lot of challenges in the workplace. It exposed the lack of care for others we seem to have.

In my research for my recently published book, Quit Losing Talent, we found that there are a few simple things leaders can do to retain and attract staff.

One way is what we coined the “praise raise.” You can’t always give money, and by the way money isn’t the number one reason people leave. A praise raise is sharing with your employees how valuable they are to you and the team.

You must do this right though or it will backfire. I share how in the book.

The other thing you can do is create a real plan to develop the skills and attributes of the people on your team.

This must be done with intentional effort.

Many leaders fail to do either of these things until it is too late. Usually on the resignation date. Grab a copy of Quit Losing Talent to learn more.
